CALL FOR PAPERS
The VIIth International Conference organized by the Institute of Byzantine Musicology will take place this year in Athens on 18-20 October 2018 with the usual main theme “The Theoria and Praxis of the Psaltic Art”, organized and executed in collaboration with the Holy Archdiocese of Athens. This seventh conference, following suit with the previous six, maintains its dual character emphasizing both musicological and psaltic/artistic aspects. This scheme allows for the call for papers inviting all scholars, chanters-musicologists and chanters-artists to participate, as well as the selection of four to five choirs from Greece and abroad.

Under the fundamental thematic axis “Theoria and praxis of the Psaltic Art” the conference shall have the specified theme of “Morphology - Aesthetics” as the ultimate degree of contemplative listening to the musico-psaltic work and simultaneously passing through to the spirit of the poet-melopœos, but also emanating the desired pleasure, and kalḕ alloíōsis “good change” (Greg. Naz., In nouam dominicam 8), and compunction.
Hence, the scholarly musicologists and musicological chanters are kindly invited to contribute to the ongoing dialogue and clarification of particular issues according to the following thematic points:
• Melopœïa and Master Composers
• Theoretical - Aesthetic Principles and the Psaltic Tradition
• Projection, Analysis, and Aesthetic View or Understanding of Classical Psaltic Compositions
• Morphology and Psaltic Performance Interpretation

The conference will take place in the Cultural Center of the Archdiocese of Athens (M. Vassiliou 15, 11854 Athens) from 18-20 October 2018 with the following schedule:

Morning: individual scientific announcements
Afternoon: commencement-key lecture delivered by Prof. Gregorios Stathis
Evening: psaltic performance (Athens Metropolitan Cathedral) and reception
Friday, 19 October 2018

invitation and call for papers
Scholars and researchers in the fields of the theory and practice of the Psaltic Art, university instructors, musicologists and chanters involved in any area of the conference’s theme are invited to participate.
participation
Participation is possible either via the presentation of scientific announcements lasting 20 minutes during the morning sessions or short presentations lasting 10 minutes during the afternoon sessions. During the afternoon sessions the utilization of graphics, posters (i.e. photographs of manuscripts, tables of theoretical cla-rification, bibliographical information, etc.) is possible. Furthermore, the participation of chanters and musicians as auditors, as well as any interested in participating in the discussion groups of the Conference is highly encouraged.
All types of participants must submit a registration application. Please state clearly the title of the proposed announcement, as well as the types of presentation materials that will be needed. participation fee
The conference participation fee is fifty euro per participant. The organization is unable to cover any expenses, but it may be able to help with finding accommodations at special rates.
payment
Participation fees are transferred to the bank account, given in the notification email and approval letter.
